Step by step
What to do right now
- 1
Blot immediately — don't rub
Use a clean white cloth or paper towel and press straight down. Work from the outside of the spill toward the center so it doesn't spread. Rubbing pushes wine deeper and damages carpet fibers.
- 2
Add cold water and keep blotting
Pour a small amount of cold water directly onto the spot, then blot again. Repeat this dilute-and-blot cycle until no more color transfers to your towel.
- 3
Use a gentle cleaning solution
Mix one tablespoon of dish soap with two cups of cold water, or use a 3:1 mixture of white vinegar and water. Apply lightly, wait five minutes, then blot with clean water to rinse.
- 4
Dry fast and weigh the spot down
Stack paper towels on the area, place a heavy book on top, and leave it for an hour. Fast drying prevents wicking, which can pull a deep stain back to the surface.
Know when to call
A DIY fix isn't always the safest fix
- The stain has dried for more than 24 hours
- The carpet is wool, silk, or a delicate natural fiber
- The spot covers a large area or has soaked into the pad
- You've already tried a store cleaner and the color changed or spread
- You notice a sour smell — that usually means the spill reached the pad
In those cases, professional hot-water extraction is usually the only way to lift the stain without leaving residue or damaging the fiber. We serve Hackensack, Jersey City, Hoboken, Manhattan, Brooklyn and surrounding towns — often with same-week availability.
